The first thing people tell you about Westchester is how close it is to the city. Thirty minutes on Metro North! You get space and trees and you can still get to Manhattan whenever you want!
That is all true. But there are a few things worth knowing before you sign a lease.
We started Club West so women in Westchester could actually meet each other. Monthly events, a private Discord, and member perks from local businesses. See what membership includes →
The commute math changes everything
Thirty minutes to Grand Central sounds great until you factor in the drive to the train station, parking, waiting for the train, and getting to wherever you are actually going once you arrive. Door to door, it is an hour minimum. You stop going into the city as often as you planned.
This matters because if your social life is still in the city, it erodes slowly. You skip one dinner because the train schedule does not work. Then another because you are tired. Within six months your city friends have adjusted to you not being around, and you have not replaced them with anyone local.
The car changes how you socialize
In the city you walk everywhere. You bump into people. Your neighborhood has a personality and you absorb it by being outside. In Westchester you drive. From your house to a parking lot and back. Your neighborhood might be beautiful but you do not interact with it the same way.
This is the single biggest adjustment and nobody warns you about it. The casual, unplanned social contact that cities provide does not exist in the suburbs. Every interaction has to be intentional. You have to decide to see someone, get in the car, and go. That is a higher bar than “walk past the coffee shop and see who is there.”
If you want a group to go with, Club West plans outings like these for members every month. Learn more →
The friend timeline is longer than you expect
In the city, you can meet someone at a party on Friday and have brunch with them Sunday. In Westchester, friendships build slower. You meet someone at an event, maybe exchange numbers, text a few times, try to find a day that works for both of you, and eventually get coffee three weeks later. It is just slower. Accepting that instead of fighting it makes the first year a lot easier.
Our members in Yonkers — our biggest group by far — all say the same thing: the first few months were lonely, and then something clicked.
Where to start
Find one recurring thing and commit to it. A fitness class, a club, a volunteer gig. Anything that puts you in the same room with the same people on a regular basis. That is how friendships form here. Not from one-off events, from showing up repeatedly.
Say yes to everything for the first three months. You will be tired. You will not feel like it. Go anyway. The women in our community who built strong friend groups fast are the ones who showed up even when it was inconvenient.

Get into a group chat. Our Discord is where a lot of the real connection happens. Someone posts “anyone want to grab dinner tonight in White Plains?” and three people say yes. That low-effort, spontaneous thing is what the suburbs are missing, and a group chat recreates it digitally.

Club West exists because of this exact problem
We started because Diana Romero was posting on TikTok about her life in Westchester, sharing her authentic self, when she noticed local women engaging with her content and connecting in the comments. She offered a meetup idea and the response was immediate. Over a thousand women signed up. That tells you everything about how many women are dealing with exactly what you are dealing with right now.
Over a thousand women have joined since we launched in September 2025, spread across more than 20 towns. Membership is $10/month and includes regular events and access to the Discord. Apply here.
If you just moved to Yonkers specifically, we wrote a whole guide to the city based on what our members have learned.
