Look, we love Westchester. But if your go-to date night is still “pick a restaurant on the Post Road and hope for the best,” it’s time to expand the playbook. We asked our members what actually works for date night in Westchester County, and the answers ranged from under-the-radar BYOB spots to full-blown romantic getaways in the Hudson Valley. Here’s what’s worth your time.
When you’re trying to impress (anniversary-worthy spots)
X2O Xaviars on the Hudson, Yonkers — This is the one. Sitting right on the Yonkers pier with floor-to-ceiling views of the Hudson River and the Palisades, X2O is where you go when the occasion actually matters. Chef Peter Kelly’s tasting menu runs around $135 per person, and it’s worth every dollar. Ask for a window table when you book, and book at least two weeks out for a Friday or Saturday. The lobster risotto is the thing people talk about, but honestly, trust whatever the server recommends off the specials.
The Inn at Pound Ridge by Jean-Georges — Jean-Georges Vongerichten’s Westchester outpost in a converted 1833 farmhouse. The black truffle pizza is famous for a reason. Expect to spend $150-200 for two with drinks. It’s a 40-minute drive from most of lower Westchester, which somehow makes it feel more like an event. Reservations on Resy fill up fast on weekends.
Mulino’s of Westchester, White Plains — Old-school Italian with white tablecloths, a piano player on weekends, and portions that could feed a family of four. It’s been here forever and the regulars treat it like a second living room. Not trendy. Not trying to be. The veal chop is enormous and the service makes you feel like you’re the only table in the room. Plan on $200+ for two.
First date energy (low pressure, good conversation)
If you’re setting someone up or getting back into dating after a while, you want somewhere with enough atmosphere to carry the conversation but not so formal that a mediocre date drags on for three hours.
Purdy’s Farmer & the Fish, North Salem — Farm-to-table in a converted 18th-century farmhouse with a big outdoor patio. The raw bar is a good move because you can keep it light if the vibe isn’t clicking, or order more if it is. Cocktails are strong and creative. Weeknight dinner here is one of the best low-key date moves in northern Westchester.
Bartaco, Port Chester — Hear us out. Yes, it’s a small chain. But the upstairs bar area has a great energy on a Thursday or Friday night, the street corn tacos are addictive, and you can get out for $60. It doesn’t take itself too seriously, which takes the pressure off. No reservations, so show up a little early or grab drinks at the bar.
The Cookery, Dobbs Ferry — Small, buzzy, and the food consistently delivers. The mushroom flatbread and the short rib are both excellent. It’s right on Main Street in Dobbs Ferry, so you can walk around the village after dinner. Great for a second or third date when you want to show you have actual taste.
Casual weeknight dates (because Tuesday counts too)
Not every date night needs to be a production. Sometimes you just need to get out of the house and sit across from your person without a kid interrupting.
Taqueria La Venganza, Peekskill — A tiny spot in downtown Peekskill doing some of the best tacos in the county. Cash only, limited seating, zero pretense. The al pastor is phenomenal. Pair it with a walk along the Peekskill waterfront after. Total cost for two: maybe $35.
Captain Lawrence Brewing, Elmsford — The taproom is huge, dog-friendly (in the outdoor area), and they usually have a food truck parked outside. Grab a flight of whatever’s seasonal, split some food truck tacos, and just… hang out. It’s the opposite of a fancy dinner and sometimes that’s exactly right.
Koku Ramen, Mamaroneck — When it’s cold and you want to sit close together over something warm, this is the spot. The tonkotsu is rich and the space is small enough that it feels intimate without trying. You’ll be in and out in an hour, which leaves time for a movie at the Mamaroneck Cinemas down the street.
Get off the couch (active and adventure dates)
Dinner is great. But some of the best date nights in Westchester don’t involve a restaurant at all.
Kayaking on the Hudson, Croton or Cold Spring — Hudson River Recreation in Croton runs sunset paddles that are genuinely romantic. You’re out on the water as the sun drops behind the hills. Rentals run about $25-30 per hour. Go on a weekday evening in summer when the river is calmer and the crowds thin out. Cold Spring is a short drive north and has even more dramatic scenery.
Harvest Moon Farm & Orchard cooking classes, North Salem — They run seasonal cooking classes throughout the year that use ingredients from the farm. It’s hands-on, you actually learn something, and you leave with a full stomach. Classes are usually $85-100 per person. Check their website for the schedule because they sell out.
Rockwood Hall trail to the Hudson, Sleepy Hollow — This is a sneaky-good date. It’s an easy 2-mile walk through the former Rockefeller estate grounds that ends at a rocky beach on the Hudson. Bring a blanket, a bottle of wine, and some cheese from DeCicco’s. Free. Better than most $200 dinners. The sunset from the waterfront is unreal, especially in fall.
Saw Mill River Audubon nature walks — They run guided birding and nature walks around the county. It sounds niche, but walking through the woods with someone while a guide points out hawks and wildflowers is weirdly great for conversation. And it’s free or donation-based.
Seasonal picks that are actually worth the hype
Westchester Broadway Theatre dinner shows, Elmsford — This place has been running since the 1970s and it’s still going strong. Dinner and a full Broadway-style musical in one package, usually around $80-100 per person. The food is surprisingly decent. The shows rotate every few months. It’s corny in the best possible way and your partner will love it or you’ll both laugh your way through it. Either way, good date.
Jazz Forum Arts, Tarrytown — Live jazz in a basement club on a Friday or Saturday night. Cover is usually $10-25 depending on the act. The space is intimate, the music is excellent, and Tarrytown is one of the best walking villages in the county. Grab dinner at Goosefeather (Vietnamese-inspired, in the Tarrytown House Estate) beforehand and you’ve got yourself a full evening.
Caramoor Center for Music and the Arts, Katonah — Summer concerts in the outdoor Venetian Theater are one of Westchester’s best-kept date secrets. Pack a picnic (they encourage it) and spread out on the lawn before the show. Tickets range from $25-75 depending on the performance. The grounds are gorgeous and the whole thing feels like something out of a movie.
Stone Barns Center, Pocantico Hills — Yes, Blue Hill at Stone Barns is the famous restaurant here, and if you can swing the $300+ per person tasting menu, go for it at least once. But even without the restaurant, Stone Barns runs farm tours, workshops, and seasonal events that make for a great afternoon date. The farmers market on weekend mornings is a low-key way to spend a Saturday together.
The romantic getaway option (when you need more than a few hours)
Sometimes the best date night in Westchester County is actually a date weekend in the Hudson Valley.
The Roundhouse, Beacon — A boutique hotel built around a waterfall. Yes, really. Rooms start around $250/night and the on-site restaurant is solid. Walk to Dia:Beacon the next morning and wander through massive art installations. Downtown Beacon has enough shops and cafes to fill an entire afternoon. This is the move for an anniversary or a “we need to reconnect” weekend.
Glenmere Mansion, Chester — If budget isn’t the primary concern, Glenmere is a Relais & Chateaux property in a Tuscan-style mansion about 45 minutes north of White Plains. Rooms start around $500/night but the spa, the grounds, and the restaurant make it feel like you left the state entirely.
A few more that deserve a mention
Monteverde at Oldstone Manor, Cortlandt Manor — Italian fine dining in a stone manor house. The outdoor terrace overlooking the Croton Reservoir is spectacular in warm weather.
Sushi Nanase, White Plains — Omakase counter with 12 seats. The chef picks everything. It’s a completely different experience from regular sushi and runs about $150 per person. You need to text to reserve.
DeCicco & Sons wine tastings — Multiple locations across the county. They do free wine tastings on Friday evenings. It’s casual, it’s social, and it costs you nothing unless you buy a bottle (which you will).
