How to make friends as an adult in Westchester County

We hear this from almost every woman who joins Club West: “I moved here and I literally do not know anyone.”

Or the other version: “I have lived here for years and my only friends are the moms I met through my kid’s school.” Which works fine until your kids are in different classes and suddenly you never see those people anymore.

Making friends as an adult is genuinely hard. Nobody warns you about that. In college you are surrounded by people your age who are all figuring things out at the same time. Then you graduate, move somewhere for work or a relationship, and realize you have to actively try to meet people. In the suburbs, it gets even worse because there is no natural gathering place. You are not bumping into people at a bodega or a subway platform. You are driving from your house to a parking lot and back.

What does not work

We will save you some time on the things that do not work.

Apps like Bumble BFF. Some people have luck with these. Most of our members did not. It feels like dating but worse because there is no clear structure. You match, you text, you maybe get coffee once, and then it fizzles. Too much effort for too little payoff.

Going to bars alone. Nobody does this. And if you do, you are mostly going to meet men who think you are there to meet them.

Waiting for it to happen naturally. This is the trap. You assume you will just meet people through work or your neighborhood or whatever. And maybe you will. But “maybe eventually” is a lonely way to spend your twenties and thirties in Westchester.

What actually works

The thing that works is structured, recurring, low-pressure social situations. That is it. Not one-off events. Not networking mixers where everyone is trying to hand you a business card. Regular things where you keep seeing the same people until you actually know them.

This is why book clubs work. This is why fitness classes work when you go to the same one every week. This is why Club West works, honestly. You show up to a brunch and you recognize half the table from the happy hour last month. That is how friendships start. Not from one amazing conversation, but from a bunch of low-key ones over time.

Where to actually meet women in Westchester

Here is what we would tell someone who just moved to Westchester County and wants to meet people:

Join a fitness studio and go consistently. Not a big gym where nobody talks to each other. A smaller studio — Pilates, barre, yoga, whatever you are into. Go to the same class at the same time every week. You will start recognizing people.

Go to local events. Farmers markets, street fairs, community stuff. Westchester actually has a lot going on, especially from spring through fall. You will not make best friends at a farmers market, but you start to feel like you belong somewhere.

Find a group that meets regularly. A running club, a book club, a volunteer group, a social club. The key word is regularly. One-time events are fun but they do not build relationships.

Say yes more than you want to. This one is annoying but true. When you are new somewhere, you have to be the person who shows up even when you are tired. The women we know who built strong friend groups in Westchester are the ones who said yes to the second brunch and the third happy hour even when they did not feel like it.

The Club West route

We are obviously biased, but here is why Club West works: it removes all the hard parts. You do not have to find events. You do not have to convince anyone to go with you. You do not have to organize anything. You just show up.

We have over 1,600 members across more than 20 towns in Westchester. Events happen every week. Fitness classes, brunches, happy hours, book clubs, crafting nights, outdoor activities. The Discord is active every single day with women planning casual meetups, sharing restaurant recommendations, and just talking.
